My practice moves between two inquiries: an archiving of indigenous culture that was not passed down to me, and an excavation of personal experience, internal states, memory, and the shifting perception of self. I reconstruct the former through an autoethnographic lens; the latter through instinctive, felt image-making. Working with a visual language that fluctuates between abstraction and figuration, I deploy curvilinear and geometric forms to construct distorted yet recognizable figures.
Central to my inquiry is a return to instinctive image-making, a deliberate reclamation of the creative autonomy that precedes formal external systems. Painting, for me, is an act of recovery; I seek to unearth forms of expression rooted in primal curiosity, emotion, and symbolism rather than rigid representation.
I further engage Yoruba cultural memory by synthesizing research into indigenous symbols and ancestral narratives. Elements of Adire, Batik, and ceremonial traditions are recontextualized within contemporary compositions, creating a space where preservation and transformation exist in a state of simultaneous tension.
Ultimately, my paintings function as meditative topographies, spaces where personal experience and cultural consciousness don't just converge, but actively shape and unsettle one another..
